About Allen Bike Racks
In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family’s bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.

Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick’s son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.

The Best Bike Accessory
I bought this rack in May and I've used it non-stop since then. The rack is easy to install. The straps tighten down effortlessly. The rack has large foam pads at each touch point so there's no damage to the trunk.

Allen 102S Premium 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack
I have been impressed with this bike rack. It was easy to mount on our car with basically no assembly required. The mounting strap system securely holds the bikes in position. During shopping review for a bike rack the consumer responses were the initial factor along with the great price that swayed me in this purchase. This was a solid decision and now one of my co-workers has also purchased this product.

Happy Hatchback!
2008 Mazda 3 GT "5 door" hatchback. 1st use was roundtrip Seattle to SoCal-1200 miles 1 way. Bike & rack were secure all the way. This may be in the instructions, but here's the trick: Top hooks are like usual, bottoms DO NOT go below the bumper. Instead, loop them through both crossbars & hook them under the hatchback door. Tighten from the top crossbar, down. Easy to lift back up from there when you're ready!

Got it on sale-great rack at a great price!

Does what it's supposed to do
This is my first bike rack and I had a few misgivings the first couple of times I used it to drive my bikes to the park. However, it turned out that this rack is very good for the job.

I'm using it on a Scion tC, for the record.

I am begrudgingly giving it 5 stars, though I should give it 4.5 if it were possible. The reason is because it doesn't have lateral support straps and to my mind it makes the whole thing feel a bit flimsy. However, the 2 top and 2 lower straps do a good job of keeping the whole thing stable, even when loaded with 2 bikes.

I did not rate it 4 stars because I knew what I was getting into before I bought the rack. For the price, I think it's a good bang for your buck but I would have gladly paid -10 more for 2 side-straps.

Installation is quick, < 10 minutes once you get the hang of it. Just make sure you pull all the straps tight. Also, before and after loading the bikes tug on the rack for a bit to make sure it doesn't move.

Having said this, I'm not sure I would trust it for longer trips (>50 miles). I still cringe when taking a curve and I do it very very slowly.

Also, if you drive a Scion tC be aware that the rack + bikes covers the read license plate completely. I really hope the cops don't have an issue with this.

Excellent Product
This is a great product. Installation was very simple. Compared to other racks I've owned, this is much better quality and a very solid fit.
